Some Recent Progress in Classical General Relativity

چکیده
One of the most difficult problems in classical relativity is to understand how and when singularities form. In the 1960’s, Hawking and Penrose proved that the existence of a closed trapped surface in an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface gives rise to a singularity in space-time. However, no proof based on pure partial differential equation arguments was found, and many questions remain unanswered. Given an initial data set (gij , pij) on a three-dimensional manifold so that gij is asymptotically Euclidean and pij (the induced second fundamental form in an embedding) falls off asymptotically, it is interesting to ask the following questions.

Gravitational-wave data analysis using binary black-hole waveforms
While the inspiral and ring-down stages of the binary black-hole coalescence are well-modelled by analytical approximation methods in general relativity, the recent progress in numerical relativity has enabled us to compute accurate waveforms from the merger stage also. This has an important impact on the search for gravitational waves from binary black holes. ‘Complete’ binary black-hole wavef...

In this lecture I will report on some recent progress in understanding the relation of Dirac operators on Clifford modules over an even-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold M and (euclidean) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs models. Lecture at the IV th Conference on Clifford Algebras and their Applications in Mathematical Physics, Aachen, Germany, May 28 31, 1996 Although being a gauge theory, it is...
متن کاملکوانتش گرانش و بررسی هندسی مکانیک کوانتمی
We elaborate on some recent results on a solution of the Hilbert-space problem in minisuperspace quantum cosmology and discuss the consequences of making the (geometry of the) Hilbert space of ordinary nonrelativistic quantum systems time-dependent. The latter reveals a remarkable similarity between Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity.
متن کاملNumerical modeling of black holes as sources of gravitational waves in a nutshell
These notes summarize basic concepts underlying numerical relativity and in particular the numerical modeling of black hole dynamics as a source of gravitational waves. Main topics are the 3+1 decomposition of general relativity, the concept of a well-posed initial value problem, the construction of initial data for general relativity, trapped surfaces and gravitational waves. Also, a brief sum...
متن کاملLattice Gravity and Random Surfaces
I review recent progress in simplicial quantum gravity in three and four dimensions, in particular new results on the phase structure of modified models of dynamical triangulations, the application of a strong-coupling expansion, and the benefits provided by including degenerate triangulations. In addition, I describe some recent numerical and analytical results on anisotropic crystalline membr...
